What is Distributed Learning?

Distributed Learning (DL) is a method of instruction that relies primarily on indirect communication between students and teachers, including internet or other electronic-based delivery, teleconferencing, or correspondence. DL is a choice for BC residents who need or want to learn at a distance from a school.

DL students

  • can start school throughout the calendar year
  • have access to learning opportunities outside conventional school timetables
  • may be working adults with other responsibilities
  • may be travelling but want to continue their studies

Distributed Learning

  • provides courses for students who cannot access the courses they need in their school
  • offers a full range of courses from Kindergarten to Grade 12
  • uses engaging teaching practices
  • provides flexibility to learn at an individual pace

There are many distributed learning schools in BC. They have all signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education that ensures their commitment to quality. Any school-aged, graduated adult, or non-graduated adult, who is a resident of BC or temporarily out of the province, can take distributed learning courses at no cost. If you’d like to know more about the courses offered in BC, check out the Course Finder.

To find out more about the services you should be receiving as part of distributed learning, visit the Ministry of Education's Distributed Learning website and download the BC Distributed Learning Standards (PDF).
