Rural Professional Development Online Series 2008/09:
Purpose:
The intent is to carry on conference themes. One or more of the conference keynotes will continue their topic throughout the school year so that the conference does not end on October 24.
When:
The 2008-09 Rural Professional Development Online series will run again on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30.
Registration:
Conference participants are encouraged to register for the sessions so that you will receive an email reminding you of the session. Others are welcome to the sessions without pre-registration. It is hoped to have large audiences to allow more interaction. Please email your registration form to the Rural Strategy.

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS
Elluminate Training
Elluminate is provided free by the Virtual School Society to all educators in British Columbia. Randy Labonte will lead a session on how to access and use Elluminate for both classrooms and meetings.
Leadership
The British Columbia Education Leadership Council will provide Leadership training for current and aspiring Administrators. Districts are encouraged to participate in groups and use this training as a basis for additional training in partnership with BCELC.
Online Literature Circles
Learn about online literature circles and how to participate. Participants will be able to join the Connected Classrooms and include their own classrooms in online literature circles with other classrooms with the support and supervision of Terry Taylor and rural teacher from the Kootenays.
Power Relationships
Continue learning with Russell Bishop the Rural Conference Keynote speaker from New Zealand. Russell brings his engaging style and vast experience in building success through relationships to all educators who wish to participate.
New Teachers – Formative Assessment
Allison Sidow, Superintendent Gold Trail School District and Bev Young, Superintendent Smithers School District lead four sessions on Formative Assessment intended to support new teachers. All teachers are welcome to participate.
Tech Tools For Teachers
Jill French demonstrates technology tools that she uses in her Elementary Classroom in Vanderhoof School District. Practical examples that can be used immediately to enrich Elementary or Secondary classrooms. Learn some tools, practice them and network with others for support.

Inter-Action Strategies for Learning and Thinking
Faye Brownlie and other teaching experts from British Columbia will share learning and thinking strategies. There will be two sessions each on Math, Science and English.
The Power of E-Learning
Educators from around British Columbia will present interactive sessions focusing on use of technology in the classroom as well as in distributed learning settings.
Improving Student Completion Rates
The Okanagan Mainline region will present sessions on strategies for improving student completion rates. Sessions will focus on all students as well as aboriginal and special needs.
Exemplary Practice in British Columbia
Linda Kaser will work with presenters from around British Columbia to share exemplary practices they are engaged in to improve student learning. There will be a full range of topics that will benefit both rural and urban educators.

Community Learning Series - Web-cast Schedule: January 8 to June 25, 2007
SERIES TITLE: Multi-Graded Math Instruction
Hosted by the Island Network
Series Description: In these sessions, teachers from around the province share strategies for planning, delivering, and assessing Mathematics in multi-age classrooms. Some promising resources are also shared, as well as ways to use children’s literature in numeracy instruction.

SERIES TITLE: The Power of E-learning
Series Description: This series highlights the electronic tools and resources available to teachers, and demonstrates how to use them in support of student learning. Participants need not be experts; just willing to explore what technology can make possible.

SERIES TITLE: Teaching Strategies for the Hybrid Classroom
Session Description: Yennadon Cyberschool is in the fourth full year of a flexible hybrid face-to-face / online learning environment. It uses a variety of free, open source learning tools to complement teaching with both types of students. This presentation will look at Yennadon’s learning model, the advantages of open source software and the use of two collaborative learning tools that facilitate communication and a variety of learning activities. Manhattan is used for easy and effective online discussions, even at the elementary-school level and is a safe, protected environment for communication between teachers and students. Moodle is used for learning – both independently and interdependently – reflecting, testing, sharing, assessing, editing and a host of other learning activities. Andy Sundahl, Vice Principal of EBUS Academy, based in Vanderhoof, will be facilitating this session which will feature teachers Dave Dixon and Keith Rajala.
SERIES TITLE: Strategies for Engaging Aboriginal Learners
Hosted by the BCPVPA
Series Description: This series highlights the strategies and successes of practising administrators and teachers from around BC who have found ways to deliver culturally relevant and engaging content to their aboriginal students.

SERIES TITLE: The Learner Support Model: Meeting the Needs of ALL!
Hosted by School District 74 (Gold Trail).
Series Description: Today’s diverse classrooms require new approaches to supporting learners with special learning needs. Teachers and district staff from School District 74 share their learning journey as they meet this challenge in their small rural district.
