The Rural Education Network is an
electronic learning community composed of educators,
trustees, parents and community members who have an interest
in the future of British Columbia’s rural schools.
Their online activities ceased in September 2009 but the
archive of their activities may be found below.
Three Rural Conferences were hosted by the Rural
Education Network. They were organized as the starting point
for year long conversations that are designed to build the
necessary capacity to support our rural students. The
Ministry provided the opportunity for rural districts to
send teams of educators to learn together and to connect
with other educators who are also focused on improving the
schooling experience for rural students.
Online Professional Development activities were held
weekly to support rural teachers and administrators. The
intent was to carry on conference themes and connect
professionals from around the province.

Connected Classrooms was an opportunity for students
around the province to interact and access quality learning
activities online. Connected Classrooms activities were
supported by technology experts using Elluminate Web
Conferencing software provided by The Virtual School
Society.

The purpose of the
new teachers program was to provide support for
professionals inexperienced in working in rural districts
with challenges unique to rural and remote settings.
