Working with Teachers & School Staff

Children do their best in school when parents and teachers work together. And everyone benefits from open lines of communication. For example, if you meet your child’s teacher when school starts, you’ll have a chance to tell them anything important they should know about your child. You can also talk about how you can reach them in the future if you have questions or concerns.

Another good way to open up the lines of communication is through parent-teacher interviews. All B.C. public schools hold these meetings to keep parents up-to-date on their children’s progress.

Want to get the most from your parent-teacher interview? The B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils has developed a guide called Getting the Best for your Child from Parent-Teacher Interviews (PDF).

Need some advice on resolving an issue? Start by talking to your child’s teacher. If you still have concerns, talk to the vice-principal or principal. If that doesn’t help, contact your board of education.

All B.C. school districts have policies in place for responding to families’ concerns. The School and District Contacts website allows you to search for information about BC schools and school districts by district name or number, or by geographical area (map of B.C.)
